The socio-economic profile of selected deprived neighbourhoods in the
POSEIDON partner areas
To be in the focus of their neighbourhood activities, the POSEIDON partnership has chosen a number of urban areas that share the typical charasteristics of
deprived neighbourhoods:
- Problems such as high rates of unemployment, low incomes, low level of professional qualification
- Bad conditions of housing or roads and social problems increasingly tend to concentrate within particular town areas and neighbourhoods.
- Deprived areas within cities are frequently located in the older parts of the historic centres or in dormitory suburbs, and there frequently in areas with multi-storey buildings.
- The new problem areas are becoming "gathering places" of disadvantaged and frequently very heterogeneous groups of population that have established no or little contact between each other.
For each of the POSEIDON partner areas, a brief introduction describes the basic problem constellation in a number of deprived urban neighbourhoods, which have been chosen by the POSEIDON partners to be their target areas for pilot project activities.
Vienna In the City of Vienna, two districts were selected to be in the focus of the POSEIDON pilot activities. One target area was a neglected shopping street in the 7th Viennese district. The other area was situated in the northern part of Vienna´s 10th district.
Amsterdam The Geuzenveld-Slotermeer Urban District is one of the four western garden cities of the city of Amsterdam and has over 40,000 residents. Geuzenveld and Slotermeer were built in the 1950s and are characterised by green spaces, typical postwar low-rise buildings and an extremely diverse multicultural population.
The Province of GenovaThe Province of Genova has problems that concentrate in the residential areas of a number of small municipalities, i.e. Montoggio, Casella, Savignone, Busalla, Ronco Scrivia, Isola del Cantone, located at the borders of the northern side of Genova and in the main districts of the Scrivia Valley, with a population of about 20,000 inhabitants.
London-HaringeyLondon Haringey is an outer London borough which has a registered population of about 216,000. The borough is characterised by its huge ethnic and cultural diversity, and even described as the most multi-cultural constituency in the UK and possibly in Europe.
