The POSEIDON pilot project of Amsterdam focused on the deprived city district Geuzenveld-Slotermeer, where urban renewal at grassroots level was yet in its starting phase. Community consultation activities and training helped reaching specific person groups in the area and opened ways for involving them into policy making and developing concrete local initiatives. Based upon comprehensive needs assessment and social planning, specific local measures were successfully realised that aim at improving social activation, language co-ordination and district-oriented child care.
